Clubs and Student Activities

At I.S. 77 we aim to provide opportunities for students to engage in a wide variety of activities that cater to their diverse interests. Below are some of the different student clubs and activities currently being offered at I.S. 77, with more being added all the time in response to student interest. In addition to the clubs below, we  partner with the Greater Ridgewood Youth Council to provide after-school activities to our students, free of charge, every day after school until 5:45 pm.

Student Council

Members of the student council work to identify and solve problems around our school and community. They plan events to boost school culture and spirit. The student council is an essential tool for representing student voice at I.S. 77!

Debate Team

The debate team researches complex and controversial topics that are shaping our world and learns to construct arguments for and against them. They use their research, writing, and speaking skills to prepare for and compete in tournaments with other middle schools through our partnership with the American Debate League.

Student Ambassadors

Our student ambassadors welcome new students into our school community. They serve as peer leaders that show new students the ins and outs of what it means to be a student at I.S. 77 and help acclimate newcomers. They develop resources to support students who are new to our school and set them up for success.

Newspaper Club

Our newspaper club meets to write stories on a variety of topics that interest them and are worthy of sharing with the school community. They write, edit, layout, and include visual components for their stories to engage readers and share their work to inform our school community of important happenings.

Safety Patrol

Students in our safety patrol help to ensure that dismissal goes smoothly and safely at the end of each school day. You will recognize our safety patrol team by their bright yellow vests as they help to guide all students at dismissal to safely leave the area around the school, guiding students to safely cross at intersections and avoiding potential conflicts with vehicles.

CHAMPS Sports

Students have the opportunity to arrive early to school each day to engage in morning sports activities through our partnership with CHAMPS sports. Our sport offerings vary based on the season, and include volleyball and basketball.

Showcase Band

Students who are in our band enrichment pathway have the opportunity to try out for the Showcase Band. This group of students has shown tremendous talent and hard work in learning to play their instrument and working together as a team, and practices for performances regularly. They compete in NYSSMA (New York State School Music Association) events against other middle schools in New York.

Yearbook Club

8th graders work with staff members to put together the school yearbook for graduating students each year. These students show off their writing, layout, and photography skills in creating something that their classmates will cherish for years to come!

Arts Clubs

We have various arts clubs that meet after school, including visual arts, percussion, dance, and photography. Students in these activities have a chance to engage with their creative side and develop their artistic skills. The pieces they create might even become a part of their portfolio when applying to high schools!

Academic Support

There are opportunities during the school day, after school, and on Saturdays to provide students with additional small-group support in their core subject areas. Students who enroll in these programs show tremendous growth over the course of a school year!
